When he says he's been around a long time, he means it. Horseshoe crab fossils have been found in rock that is 445 million years old. That’s almost half-a-billion years!
In all that time, he has hardly changed. How do we know? Because he looks almost identical to fossils from the Jurassic (dinosaur) period.
His tail, or telson, looks like a stinger, but it’s not. He uses it for steering, or to flip himself over when he ends up on his back. Want a demonstration? He’s happy to flip-flop if it will win your vote.
